Washington State University
Mary F. Paine, RPh, PhD is a professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Washington State University. She earned her BS in pharmacy at Oregon State University and PhD in pharmaceutics at the University of Washington, then completed a post-doctoral fellowship in clinical pharmacology at the University of Michigan. Dr. Paine has nearly 25 years of experience using translational research approaches to evaluate potential pharmacokinetic xenobiotic-drug interactions, particularly those precipitated by natural products, which include botanical dietary supplements and everyday foods. She leads the Center of Excellence for Natural Product Drug Interaction Research, funded by the National Institutes of Health. This Center is a multidisciplinary effort comprising clinical pharmacologists, natural products chemists, bioinformaticists, and health communications experts whose mission is to provide leadership and guidance on the study and dissemination of these complex, understudied, and underreported interactions. She has coauthored more than 120 publications as original research articles, reviews, editorials, and book chapters. A member of ASCPT since 2006, Dr. Paine is a former associate editor for Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, has served on the Scientific Awards Selection Task Force, and is the recipient of the 2021 ASCPT & FDA William B. Abrams Award. She is currently serving as council member and treasurer-elect for the International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics, as well as her third five-year term as associate editor for Drug Metabolism and Disposition.
