Youssef Roman has recently joined the Division of Translational and Precision Medicine at the FDA. Before his new appointment at the FDA, Dr. Roman was an Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of pharmacy with an appointment in the Department of Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science. He earned his PharmD from Oregon State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota School of Pharmacy. His work focused on the association of urate levels with cardiovascular diseases and the role of genomics and pharmacogenomics in gout management. Dr. Roman's research also focused on engaging racial minority groups in genetic research using a community-based genetic research framework. Some of his work included the Hmong in Minnesota, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders in Hawaii, and African Americans and Filipino Americans in Virginia. He has published both original research and review papers in this area and has presented his research at clinical pharmacology, national pharmacy, and rheumatology meetings. He has been a member of ASCPT since 2017 and has served on multiple steering committees, including pharmacogenomics, special populations, and rare diseases.
