The Blood-Brain Barrier: The Last Frontier in Pharmacokinetics

The 2023 Darrell Abernethy Award presentation will highlight work done on centrally acting medications. By utilizing both an in vitro and in vivo approach that is working to inform each other, we are able to learn more about this compartment that is imperative to determine the true amount of exposure of these medications. By understanding the amount of distribution across the blood-brain barrier compared to the amount of medication in a peripheral compartment (blood), we will better be able to extrapolate the concentrations of these medications from this more accessible peripheral compartments.
