What Investigations into Child Deaths Teach Us About Treatment Gaps in High-Mortality Settings
Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) began in 2015 with the goal of generating accurate, detailed cause of death information for stillbirths and deaths in children under 5 years of age in high-mortality settings. CHAMPS is ongoing in 7 countries. In each location, teams identify deaths, obtain consent, then gather tissue and body fluid specimens, clinical data from records, and reports from families on what happened ("verbal autopsies"). Tissues and body fluids undergo extensive examination. All the data come together and are reviewed by panels of local experts, who assign causes of death and determine what actions might have prevented the deaths. The presentation will review findings to date from over 4000 deaths, highlighting the need for better use and availability of therapeutic agents and surprising results on the role of resistant infections.
